Volume of a box
Coming soon. We're checking this lesson against the app, step by step, so it works when you run it with a class. You can read the plan now. The lesson pack, teaching mode and assigning open once it's checked.
Fill a box you built with centimetre cubes, then find the shortcut: length × width × height.

Learning goals
- Understand volume as the number of unit cubes that fill a solid
- Use V = l × w × h
Plan
- 1
Build at real size10 minStudents
Print the box (5 cm wide, 3 cm tall, 2 cm deep) at real size (check it with the ruler in the footer) and build it.
- 2
Fill15 minStudents
Fill the box with cubes one layer at a time. How many in one layer? How many layers?
- 3
Shortcut10 minYou lead
Write the multiplication for one layer (5 × 2), then for all 3 layers: 5 × 2 × 3 = 30 cubic centimetres.
- 4
Predict and check10 minYou lead
On the board, change a size in FoldNets. Students predict the volume, then check it against the volume FoldNets shows.
To talk about
- Two boxes have the same volume. Must they be the same shape?
- What happens to the volume when you double the height?
