Build a blocky robot, then draw it from the top, the front and the side, and check by turning the 3D model.

Ontario Gr 5–6 · Spatial Sense E1

Learning goals

  • Draw the top, front and side views of a 3D model
  • Match a set of views to the model they came from

Plan

  1. 1

    Build20 minStudents

Pairs build the robot's six boxes and glue them together, using the 3D view in FoldNets as the guide.

  2. 2

    Look5 minYou lead

Put the robot on the desk. Crouch down: what do you see from the front? Stand up: what does the top look like?

  3. 3

    Draw15 minStudents

On grid paper, draw the top, front and side views as flat shapes. Each box becomes a rectangle.

  4. 4

    Check5 minStudents

Press Top, Front and Side above the 3D model in FoldNets to see the robot flat from straight above, straight at its front and straight at its right side. Did your drawings match?

To talk about

  • Which view hides the robot's legs? Why?
  • Could two different models have the same front view?
  • Swap your three views with another pair: can they tell which way the robot faces?
