Faces, edges and vertices
Coming soon. We're checking this lesson against the app, step by step, so it works when you run it with a class. You can read the plan now. The lesson pack, teaching mode and assigning open once it's checked.
Build a cube and count its parts by touching them.
Ontario Gr 1–2 · Spatial Sense E1 · Common Core K.G.B.4, 2.G.A.1
Learning goals
- Name a face, an edge and a vertex (corner) on a solid
- Count the faces, edges and vertices of a cube
Plan
- 1
Notice5 minYou lead
Pass around a box. Ask what students notice: flat sides, straight edges, pointy corners. Write their words on the board.
- 2
Name the parts5 minYou lead
Turn the cube in FoldNets on the board. Point to a face, an edge and a vertex. Students repeat the words and point to the same parts on the box.
- 3
Build15 minStudents
Students cut out the net, fold on the dashed lines and glue the tabs. As they colour each face a different colour, they count the faces out loud.
- 4
Count together5 minYou lead
Run a finger along each edge to count them (12), then touch each corner (8). Mark a corner with a sticker so you know where you started.
To talk about
- Which has more corners, a cube or a pyramid?
- Can a shape have faces but no corners? Think of a can of soup.
